Inspecting Wadsworth homes, from the match-factory era to new subdivisions
Wadsworth sits in southeastern Medina County, a short drive from our home base in Medina. The city grew up around the Ohio Match Company, which began making its blue-tipped wooden matches in Wadsworth in 1895 and closed in 1987 (Ohio Magazine); locals simply called the factory “The Match” (Wadsworth Area Historical Society). That history lives on in the Blue Tip Festival, first held in 1972. It starts the Tuesday after Father’s Day with a parade and the lighting of a giant blue-tip match downtown, and festival profits go to Wadsworth non-profits (Blue Tip Festival; Congressional Record, 50th anniversary, 2023).
The housing stock spans both eras. Citywide, the Census counts 10,909 housing units in Wadsworth, with a median year built of 1978; 13% were built before 1940 and 29% before 1960, while 40% were built in 1990 or later (Census ACS 2020–2024 5-year estimates, tables B25034 and B25035).
Homes across that range have predictable weak spots, and we check every one of them:
- Basements and water: staining, cracks, efflorescence, sump pump operation, grading and downspout discharge.
- Older electrical and plumbing: ungrounded outlets, missing GFCIs, double taps and aging supply and drain lines in pre-1960 homes.
- Roofs and attics: shingle condition, flashing, ventilation and insulation. Drone roof inspections are included when needed.
- HVAC and water heaters: age and condition of furnaces, air conditioners and water heaters in 1970s through 2000s homes.
- Radon: 24 of our 69 Wadsworth inspections included a radon test (NOPI’s inspection records).
- Termites: 12 of our 69 Wadsworth inspections included a termite (WDI) inspection (NOPI’s inspection records).
These are general considerations for homes of these eras, not a summary of inspection findings.

Radon in Medina County
A county percentage summarizes past tests; it doesn’t predict the result for any one house, so every home should be tested. See Northeast Ohio radon levels by county for all eight counties we serve.
