Termites and Stow’s 1970s homes
Stow is a Summit County suburb next to Cuyahoga Falls, Hudson and Kent. The median year built among the Stow homes we’ve inspected (NOPI’s inspection records) is 1974, and 21% were built before 1960, so most are ranches, split-levels and colonials from the 1960s through the 1980s. Citywide, the Census counts 15,394 housing units in Stow, with a median year built of 1979; 5% were built before 1940 and 17% before 1960 (Census ACS 2020–2024 5-year estimates, tables B25034 and B25035).
Our Stow sample is small (41+ inspections), but one pattern stands out: about a third of our Stow clients (32%) have added a termite (WDI) inspection, more than in any other city on our pages. Wood decks, sill plates and wood near soil on homes this age are worth a close look.
Homes like these have predictable weak spots, and we check every one of them:
- Termites and wood-destroying insects: we look for mud tubes, damaged wood and conditions that invite them, such as wood-to-soil contact and moisture; a full WDI inspection is a separate add-on.
- Decks and porches: ledger attachment, rot and railing safety on decks added over the years.
- Original 1970s systems: furnaces, AC, water heaters and roofs at or past expected life.
- Wiring and plumbing by era: occasional aluminum branch wiring in 1960s-70s homes; galvanized or early plastic piping.
- Basements: block walls, cracks, moisture and sump pumps.
- Radon: 27% of our Stow clients add a radon test.
These are general considerations for homes of this era, not a summary of inspection findings.
